About Us

About Us

One of the key issues GBU focuses on is the impact of racial and ethnic disparities on health outcomes. As discussed in “Unequal Treatment: Confronting Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Health Care,” these disparities can have serious consequences for patients, leading to poorer health outcomes and even premature death. GBU works to address these disparities by advocating for policies that promote equitable access to healthcare and addressing the root causes of these inequities.

However, GBU recognizes that healthcare is just one piece of the puzzle when it comes to promoting health equity. As outlined in “The Social Determinants of Health: A Political Economy Perspective,” factors such as economic status, education, and living conditions can also have a significant impact on an individual’s health. GBU works to address these SDOH through a variety of initiatives, including supporting access to affordable housing, promoting education and job training programs, and advocating for policies that address economic inequality.

GBU also recognizes the importance of actively combating racism in order to promote health equity. As discussed in “Dismantling Racism: A Workbook for Social Change Groups,” racism can have both direct and indirect impacts on health, and addressing it is crucial to creating a more equitable society. GBU works with community members to educate them about the ways in which racism can impact health and to provide tools and resources for combating it.

Through its efforts, GBU hopes to create a Western New York where all members of the community have the opportunity to live healthy, fulfilling lives, regardless of their race or ethnicity. By addressing the social determinants of health and actively combating racism, GBU is working to reduce health disparities and promote health equity for all.

Values:

  • Equity: We believe in creating a fair and just society where everyone has access to the resources they need to achieve good health.
  • Empowerment: We believe in empowering communities to take ownership of their health and well-being by promoting participatory decision-making and capacity building.
  • Sustainability: We believe in promoting long-term solutions that are economically, socially, and environmentally sustainable.
  • Collaboration: We believe in working in partnership with local communities, governments, and healthcare providers to create meaningful change.

Through these values, we will work towards our mission and vision, and continue to support USA, South America and Africa in achieving improved health outcomes through addressing social determinants.

St Bonaventure with Out Borders Program

The St Bonaventure Students with Out Borders program is an excellent example of what can be accomplished when people come together to make a difference. Every year, GBUCBO sponsors a group of students to provide free medical care to those in need in the Dominican Republic. From March 18-25, 2023, the program provided free medical care to 3-400 patients and free food to 100 families.

This program has had a profound impact on the Dominican people. In many cases, this was the first time the patients had seen a doctor in many years. St Bonaventure students were able to diagnose and treat a wide range of illnesses, ranging from infections to chronic conditions. Furthermore, they provided preventative care, such as vaccinations and health education.

However, the program did not end there. Additionally, St Bonaventure students provided free food to families in need. It is an essential service in a country where many people struggle to make ends meet. As a result of providing this support, the students were able to make a real difference in the lives of these families.
